Training Events Calendar

This part of the web site provides details of training events currently on offer within the field of traffic and transport planning. The range of events can be very varied including one or two day training courses, evening professional meetings, site visits or even a part time evening course stretching over 20 weeks. This site provides you the opportunity to search for appropriate training and development opportunities (click on the highlighted header to sort information by type, location, duration or price). You can also use the site to check details about the course provider.

The development of this part of the website was co-financed by Transport for London’s Project STAR which aims to provide a more co-ordinated approach to the development of staff in TfL Streets and in the London Boroughs.

Start Date Event Provider Type Duration
10/03/2010 Introduction to Transport Modelling PTRC Education and Research Services Course 2 days

This popular two day course is designed to familiarise transport engineers and planners with the basic techniques currently used in traffic and transport forecasting. In particular, it describes how the application of techniques has evolved to meet new requirements and levels of information introduced by the changing emphasis on the evaluation of schemes, measures, policies and packages. The course therefore provides practical knowledge and experience of the principles and techniques of transport modelling, as well as key issues of understanding and interpreting the output from transport models.

15/03/2010 Economics and Environmental Appraisal of Transport Activities Newcastle University Course 5 days

This course enables delegates to gain an understanding of the economic and environmental appraisal of transport activities. It introduces the New Approach to Appraisal (NATA) linked to the sustainability principles of economy, environment and society, and provides an understanding of the economic principles required for the economic assessment of transport activities as outlined in the NATA Economic Objective and Environment Objective. The concept of multi-criteria assessment for comparison and ranking of alternatives is also introduced.

24/03/2010 the Scottish Transport Applications & Research (STAR) Conference PTRC Education and Research Services Conference 1 day

The aim of STAR 2010 is: “To disseminate current transport research and practice that is relevant and applicable to the transport agenda within Scotland.” For Scottish based transport practitioners the chance to attend suitable professional development conferences is often limited as a result of many of these events being centred on London, the Midlands or even abroad. STAR 2010 provides an excellent opportunity in a cost and time efficient way. The demands on Scotland’s transport system continue to change through increased economic pressures, volatile fuel costs and the need to address sustainability. It is therefore extremely important that transport practitioners working in Scotland are kept up to date with the latest transport applications and research, thus addressing their professional development requirements. The challenge facing all transport researchers and practitioners in the private and public sectors is to meet these challenges in a balanced way within the limited resources available and to make viable cases for appropriate transport interventions. This 6th annual STAR conference offers an opportunity for transport practitioners from all backgrounds to come together to share their knowledge and learn from the experiences of others.

12/05/2010 Sustainable Pavement Maintenance - The Way Forward PTRC Education and Research Services Course 1 day

Environmental and economic considerations are the twin drivers for energy conservation and re-use of highway construction materials and suitable industrial by-products. Recycling options bring considerable savings in Landfill and Aggregate Taxes. The recent Stern Report heightens concern for the future well being of our planet, and the focus of the Code of Practice for Highway Maintenance Management on Safety, Serviceability and Sustainability requires all involved to seek optimum, economic and environmental (reduced carbon footprint) solutions. Course participants will gain: l A comprehensive understanding of various processes and stages of deterioration of highway pavements and options for repair and ongoing maintenance. l Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of surface maintenance treatments, including recycling, and their appropriate and cost effective application. l An awareness of options for reduction in the carbon footprint of road construction and repair methodologies.

STAR Competence:

18/05/2010 The 2nd Annual Traffic Management Conference (Incorporating the 6th Annual Bus Priority Conference) PTRC Education and Research Services Conference 2 days

The event will be directed towards good practice in the UK and Ireland and practical issues of implementation. It will be multi themed and targeted at young professionals, experienced technical staff and middle managers. It is appreciated that one of the major benefts of conferences is the opportunity to network with colleagues and the timetable will be structured to offer delegates additional events to achieve this.

STAR Competence:

24/05/2010 MOVA - Design and Implementation - Birmingham JCT Consultancy Ltd Course 3 days

MOVA is a relatively advanced subject and delegates should have good background knowledge of traffic signal design & operation before attending this course. Day one is suitable for beginners; the three day course is intended to give a complete all round understanding of Mova design and implementation; the fourth day is only available to those who attend or have previously attended the three day course, and covers Linked MOVA.

STAR Competence:

27/05/2010 Linked MOVA Design and Applications - Birmingham JCT Consultancy Ltd Course 1 day

This more advanced MOVA Course my be of interest to those who have attended the three day course previously. This course is for more specialised design and examples of Linked MOVA systems for experienced MOVA designers / operators.

05/07/2010 Introduction to Traffic Signals - Bournemouth JCT Consultancy Ltd Course 2 days

For all people with an interest in traffic and transportation, the course gives a robust introduction to traffic signals, with the emphasis mainly on practical issues. The twin objectives are to place traffic signals within the mainstream of transport know-how, and to provide a solid foundation for subsequent training and career development in traffic signal modelling or design.

07/07/2010 LinSig V3 Computer Workshop - Bournemouth JCT Consultancy Ltd Workshop 3 days

Assuming a good understanding of traffic signal terminology and how modern traffic signals work, the objective of the workshop is to instil the correct and most efficient ways of using LinSig through explanations of signal modelling theory, demonstrations of application, and “hands-on” tutored exercises. The intended outcome is a high level of confidence in correctly applying LinSig to individual junctions.

STAR Competence: 10.1 Detailed Modelling

19/07/2010 Advanced Traffic Signal Design - Bournemouth JCT Consultancy Ltd Course 4 days

This is a four day course which looks at the more intricate design procedures available to engineers. The course will highlight the design techniques available to squeeze extra capacity and efficiency from junctions using signalling methods and geometric configurations. In particular, some of the new features and capabilities in LINSIG V2 will be used to teach advanced design techniques which previously have only been possible manually
