National Pub Quiz 4th March 2010

How the teams fared in Wales

Three fiercely competitive teams from Atkins (Rowden’s Romantics, led by David Rowden), Mott Macdonald (McDonalds, led by Sam Kendall) and WTRC (Cymru Coordinates, led by Stuart Cole and complemented by PBA’s Helen Bowkett) faced off against each other at La Tasca Tapas Restaurant in Cardiff for the 2010 TPS National and Regional Pub Quiz.

After an early lead taken by Rowden’s Romantics, Cymru Coordinates continued the winning streak that Stuart, Martin Evans and Owen Clark established as members of the legendary Glamorgan Wanderers Team 2009. Congratulations to them!

Official Results

Cymru Coordinates - 50 points. Consistent throughout except for blemish in round 2
Rowden’s Romantics - 44 points. Final flourish after solid start and weaker second half
McDonalds - 32 points.  Great start but faded; not favoured for the wet

How to Help Pedestrians 25 January 2010

Dr Jake Desyllas of Intelligent Space/Atkins

An appreciative audience of around 30 people attended this second meeting of the Transport Planning Society in Wales. Our guest speaker treated everyone to a ‘tour de force’ on transport planning for pedestrians. With copious and well-selected pictures he showed the grim legacy of planning exclusively for vehicles in major towns and cities in the United Kingdom.

On the positive side he illustrated the transition to streetscape enhancements, shared space, lower speed areas such as home zones, road user charging, peak time pedestrianisation and the creation of great spaces such as Trafalgar Square and Oxford Circus in London. The last of these was informatively depicted in his 3-minute video presentation.

Earlier in the evening Victoria Hills, Chair of the Transport Planning Society, welcomed members and non-members. She commended the Executive of TPS Cymru for the lively and vital start of the organisation in Wales, as evidenced by responses to the recent member survey. Looking forward, she outlined a programme for growth and development. Key features include promotion of corporate and stakeholder membership, the strategic plan, benchmarking, a levy/subsidy approach to nations and regions, continuation of the annual pub quiz, annual transport planner of the year award, young peoples’ bursaries and an annual dinner.

The evening closed with a lively question and answer session. Jake Desyllas ably dealt with the points raised, rising to the challenge of how to take his message to Local Authority staff in Wales and the rest of the United Kingdom. Executive member Helen Bowkett gave the well-deserved vote of thanks to the speaker before the Chair Andrew Hemmings thanked Atkins for sponsoring a most successful event.
